Surface ablation techniques (PRK, LASEK, Epi-LASIK) are suitable for people whose corneas are too thin to be good candidates for standard LASIK. Low to moderate myopia, hyperopia and astigmatism can be treated with surface ablation techniques.
These procedures are similar to LASIK, except that a tissue flap is not created. The laser treatment is done on the surface of the eye after removing the outer layer of cells.
The final visual results achieved by LASIK and surface ablation technques are the same, although it takes longer (about a month) for the eye to heal completely with surface ablation techniques.
