Multi/Tri-focal Lenses (Tecnis/LISA)*
Seeing near, intermediate and far—with a single lens.
When we are young, the natural lens acts like the zoom function in a camera, allowing us to focus up close, without the need for reading glasses or bifocals. As we age, the lens progressively becomes dysfunctional resulting in loss of near vision (presbyopia) that requires the use of reading glasses or trifocals.
During trifocal intraocular lens implantation; your natural, aged, non-elastic lens is removed and replaced with a new, implantable intraocular lens (IOL).
Advances in the technology of IOL have made it possible to give patients the choice of different trifocal IOLs that correct vision at all distances; far, near and everything in between.
Trifocal Lens Implantation
Trifocal lens implantation is a painless outpatient procedure. It is performed with numbing eye drops and sedating drugs. It involves removing the eye’s natural lens, as in a cataract operation. A flexible synthetic lens implant is then placed inside the eye through a tiny incision. The tiny incision closes by itself, without sutures. The procedure takes 15 minutes per eye.
Visual recovery is quite rapid. You are able to return to work the day after your procedure. It may also be fine-tuned with LASIK if a small refractive error remains.
Routine follow-up visits after mutifocal IOL implantation are scheduled on postoperative-day 1 and -month 1. You’ll use prescribed eye drops after your procedure for a month.
Types of Trifocal Lens Implants Offered by Prof. Cosar
There are two popular IOLs that presbyopia patients can choose from according to need and physical limitations. These are marketed under the names of Alcon Panoptix and Zeiss AT LISA.
AMO Tecnis® Trifocal IOL
The Tecnis Trifocal IOL has been approved for use in the United States since 2009. This lens provides vision correction at multiple distances under low, medium and highly lighted conditions. About 90% of patients with a goal to be independent from glasses or contact lenses report that they have achieved their goal.
Zeiss AT LISA Trifocal IOL
About 90% of the patients are satisfied with the postoperative outcomes and the attained vision quality. This lens provides vision correction at multiple distances under low, medium and highly lighted conditions. This lens is especially suitable for computer users since it provides a satisfactory intermediate vision.
After Trifocal IOL implantation, since the natural lens has been replaced, cataract surgery will never be needed and the artificial lens will not age, providing visual stability to the lens of the eye.
Ask Prof. Cosar to evaluate your vision challenges so that she can recommend the correct IOL for your unique needs.
